The Complete e-bike kit Buying Guide

Everyone only needs to participate in physical activity, riding a bicycle, playing, or doing some sports activities that make us sweat. Cycling has long been known as a way of fitness and a way of traveling.

Electric bicycles are the fastest-growing category in the bicycle industry. If you are considering buying an electric bike conversion kit, or just want to know the facts, this guide will answer many of your questions

How Do Electric Bikes Work?

Electric bicycles look like ordinary bicycles. They are traditional frames composed of wheels, tires, helmets, saddles, handles, front forks, etc. The difference between an electric bicycle and an ordinary bicycle is that it includes a hydraulic frame, a battery, a control mechanism and sensors, an electric motor, a brake, and a pedal sensor. Technically speaking, batteries provide electricity for the engine, and in some cases are usually charged by the grid or solar panels. Once the rider starts pushing, the pedal sensor sends a signal to the engine to provide power for the rider on steep hills and long-distance riding.

Different Types of Electric Bikes

Mainly for regulatory reasons, electric bicycles are also divided into categories that indicate their level of motor assistance. Figuring out which type of electric bicycle you need is a key decision point:

Level 1: The motor only starts when you step on the pedal and stops to help at 20 miles per hour.

Level 2: There is also a pedal-assist mode up to 20 mph and a pure throttle drive mode.

Level 3: Pedal assistance only (such as level 1), but the assistance will continue until you reach 28 mph.

Most new riders start with level 1 electric bicycles. Tier 1 bicycles are the most affordable and, from a regulatory perspective, they are also the most generally accepted. You can ride one on the city streets and many bike paths.

It is generally allowed to use Type 2 electric bicycles in the same place as Type 1 electric bicycles. That's because both classes get engine assistance at 20 mph.

Level 3 electric bicycles are popular with commuters and errand runners. Compared to Level 1 bicycles, they are faster and more powerful (and more costly). The reward of increased performance is that you can better keep up with traffic. They can also climb better and handle heavier loads. The trade-off is the inability to ride on most bike lanes or mountain bike lane systems.

Core parts and accessories for electric bicycles

Mid motor OR Hub motor

Mid motor:

Mid-motors: Many motors use this setting for various reasons. The pedal assist device responds with a natural feel so that the weight of the motor is centered and low, which helps to maintain a balanced and stable riding.

hud motors

Hub motor:

Hub motor: The rear wheel hub drive motor directly transmits pedal power to the rear wheels, giving you a feeling of being pushed. The front hub drive motors operate a bit like a front-wheel-drive bike; they also allow the use of a standard bicycle transmission system at the rear of the bicycle. Esoulbike uses a hub motor, ES CityTraveller e-bike kit is installed on the front wheel, and ES Everest MTB e-bike kit is installed on the rear wheel, which is very simple and convenient to install.

Down tube battery&Rack battery

Battery

There are two different types of batteries, and we can simply distinguish them based on their appearance.

Down tube battery

If the down tube in the inclined tube of the bicycle tripod is straight, the inclined tube can be installed, and the down tube battery can be installed.

Rack battery

The rack battery is installed at the rear of the bicycle because some types of bicycles have a curved down tube and the battery cannot be installed in that position. Even if our bicycles have straight-down tubes, we can still choose rack batteries according to our preferences or aesthetics.

Esoulbike provides a variety of types of batteries and provides different capacities to meet different needs. In the choice of battery cells, the battery provided by eSoulbike is made of ternary lithium. This battery will not pollute the environment because it contains zero heavy metals and rare metals, in sharp contrast to the general-purpose batteries that many other companies prefer to use. SGS, a world-renowned professional inspection, and certification company has conducted non-toxic and non-pollution verification on ternary lithium batteries. ROHS from Europe also reached the same conclusion on the battery. Since eSoulbike uses ternary lithium batteries by default, we can guarantee that the batteries will not be polluted during the manufacturing, operation, and recycling process. As a cyclist, with the eSoulbike battery installed, your only responsibility is to enjoy the ride as much as possible.

Electric Bike Controller

The electric bike controller is one of the key parts of the electric bike, it's the brain of the e-bike, regulating the speed of the engine, starting, stopping. The electric bike controller is linked to all other electronic components, such as the battery, the engine, and the throttle, the monitor, or other speed sensors.

The core function of an electric bike controller is to take all the inputs from all the electric components which include throttle, speed sensor, display, battery, and motor, then return the signal to implement the control. Other multiple protection functions of the controller will be different from the controller's design.

  • Defense against over-voltage.The controller tracks the battery voltage and shuts down the engine when the battery voltage is too high. The overvoltage device prevents the battery from overcharging.

  • Protection of low voltage. The controller controls the battery voltage and shuts down the engine when the battery voltage is too low. Low voltage controllers prevent the battery from over-discharge.

  • Protection of over-temperature.The controller controls the temperature of the field-effect transistor and shuts down the engine if it gets too hot.

  • Over current security. Reduce the current to the engine if too much current is supplied, which protects both the engine and the field-effect transistors.

  • Protection of the brakes. The engine shut down while braking, even though the controller took other signals at the same time.

Conclusion

A better understanding of bicycles and required accessories can greatly help you when buying, and can avoid buying unsuitable products!
