THINGS YOU SHOULD CHECK BEFORE EVERY RIDE

Whether you are a new rider or an experienced rider, it is always a good idea to check your bike before a ride to make sure it is in good working order. A quick check before each ride will ensure your safety and make sure you get the most out of your ride. In this article, we've listed some quick and easy pre-ride checks.

Tires

Check the pressure of the tires. Quickly squeeze the tire and observe the degree of depression. A more accurate method is to use an air pressure gauge. In most cases, the recommended tire pressure will be printed on the side of the tire, usually in a range (e.g. 40-65psi). The exact will depend on the ground conditions of the ride.

Check the tire surface. If there is excessive wear, cuts or cracks, replace the tire.

Wheels

Check the wheels. Spin the wheel to make sure it spins freely and that there is no rubbing or wobbling from side to side. Otherwise, the wheel may be crooked and need to be repaired, which will require a professional bike store to handle.

Brakes

Turn the wheel and apply the brakes to the front and rear independently. Rotate the wheel to ensure that the brake pads do not rub the rim or rotor. Check that there is enough braking force to ensure safety before the brake lever reaches the handlebars. No matter what type of brakes you use, do a quick visual inspection to make sure the brake pads are not worn.

Chain

Check the chain surface, clean the chain if there are large pieces of dirt; lubricate the chain if there is rust. Turn the crank backwards and observe if the chain spins quietly and freely without any resistance, upset or noise.

Keeping the chain lubricated and clean will make the ride easier and less strenuous.

Gears

Check if the gears shift smoothly. Turning the crank and shifting the gears allows the chain to shift smoothly from one cog to the other. If not, you may need to make some adjustments with a chain toggle.

Cables

Check that the cable is intact and that it is not frayed or broken. The individual cable connections are intact.

Long-distance cycling is a very enjoyable way to ride and has many health benefits. However, it can also pose some risks if you are not prepared. Check these items to make sure you have everything you need to stay safe during your ride and minimize the risks of cycling.
